It happens every year at this time

If you are a football fan, you know what I mean. It is the annual complaining about the NFL preseason. It's the whining about the meaningless games and the unfortunate injuries. It's looking in the stands and seeing them empty in the second half. You better get used to it. The NFL will not be making any changes here...

Actually they should, but won't. If they cut the preseason in half, NFL owners lose a lot of revenue. They are not prepared to do that. The players only need a couple of games to be ready for the regular season. Guys stay in shape all year round because all teams have "Optional Team Activities", known as "OTA"s. By the time they report to training camp in July, the players are already in shape and ready to play. 4 preseason games are not needed by the players...

Unfortunetly, injuries are part of football. One injury can ruin a team for the season. I remember the Atlanta Falcons a few years ago. They came into camp with a solid, young team and a franchise QB in Mike Vick. In one of those meaningless preseason games, Vick hurt his foot and missed the majority of the season. The Falcons never recovered form this and ended up having a terrible year. The Jets had a comparable situation a few years ago with QB Chad Pennington. Injuries are part of football and that will never change...

A lot of you have had your fantasy drafts already. For those of you that haven't, do yourself a favor. This is a great year to draft QB's early. The 4 super QB's to have are Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Tony Romo, and Drew Brees. You want to draft at least one of those. If you were smart enough to draft 2 of those guys, you are a genius. There is a pretty big dropoff after those 4....

Also, pay close attention to the Saint's Reggie Bush. He is going to have a tremendous season. I am seeing 1,500 total yards rushing and recieving and 12 touchdowns. He is going in the 4th and 5th rounds of most drafts. If you are one of those brilliant guys who has Bush, sit back and get ready to reap the benefits. This is the season he becomes a combination of Marshall Faulk and Thurman Thomas...

He Will Be Back

Are you on the New Orleans Saint's bandwagon yet?

Now is the time to jump aboard. This team has that certain "look" you see on championship teams. In 2007, the Saints took a step back. In 2008, they will take a giant step foward...

Bringing in linebacker Jonathan Vilma from the Jets was a brilliant move. Vilma is the kind of sideline-to-sideline tackler the Saints have lacked. He gives their defense the kind of toughness you have to have to win championships. QB Drew Brees is one of the best. Robert Meacham is an emerging star at wide reciever. Meacham has tremendous speed and is the perfect compliment to Marques Colston on the opposite side of the field..Tight end Jeremy Shockey comes over in a trade with the Giants...

The guy to watch this year is RB Reggie Bush. Now in his third year in the league, Bush is poised for a breakout year. His ability to catch passes and make big plays will become evident in 2008. He operates behind a solid offensive line and his speed alone is a nightmare for opposing defenses...

I am hearing contradicting stories out of New York about the return of Michael Straham. After the Super Bowl win over New England, Strahan announced his retirement. Now that Osi Umenyiora has been lost for the year with a knee injury, there have been rumblings about Strahan coming out of retirement. I believe this will happen. Strahan was a great player last year and that is what makes it tough. If your play in your last season regressed to a point where you were embarrassing yourself, you want to retire. But Strahan played great last season and I am sure he already misses the action. Hopefully, Strahan will be back with the Giants shortly....

Rookie RB Kevin Smith has been everything the Lions could have hoped for when they drafted him out of UCF. It took 2 preseason games for the Lions to see that. With Roy Williams and Calvin Johnson as wide recievers, this Lion offense will be fun to watch. As bad as the Lions have been for years, this will be a very entertaining team. They still have no defense. But think about it this way. Would you rather lose 10-7 or 41-35? If you have to lose, it's better to do it with lots of offense.

At least the fans will be entertained...

Weekend Heroes

1- Team USA:
They call thenselves "The Redeem Team". And redeem themselves they did. Team USA held on and beat Spain 118-107 to win the gold medal game. Dwayne Wade scored 27 points and made a key 3-pointer down the stretch. Also for Team USA, Kobe Bryant had 20 points and Lebron James scored 14. This was an especially great olympics for Wade. He spent a lot of this past NBA season dealing with shoulder and knee problems. But if the oympics were any indication, Wade is healthy again for next season with the Miami Heat...

2- Vijay Singh:
This guy is on fire right now. Singh birdied both playoff holes to win the Barclays for a 4th time. He held off Sergio Garcia and Kevin Sutherland to win the Fed-Ex Cup playoff opener. The win earned him 11,000 Fed-Ex Cup points and $1.26 million. The win was Singh's 33rd PGA Tour win. Only 3 weeks ago, he won the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational...

3- Francisco Rodriguez:
"K-Rod" picked up his major-league leading 50th save yesterday as the Angels beat Minnesota, 5-3. He becomes the fastest player to reach 50 saves in a season, getting there in 129 games. In 2003, Eric Gagne reached 50 saves in 143 games. The way K-Rod is going, Bobby Thigpen's record of 57 saves in a season will be shattered. The Angels are now 79-50 and have gigantic lead in the American League West. They host Oakland tonight...

4- Robinson Cano:
This guy will be a key player in the push to the playoffs for the Yankees. Cano hit a tie-breaking homer in the 7th inning as the Yankees held on to beat the Orioles, 8-7. The win enabled the Yanks to sweep Baltimore in Camden Yards for the first time since 2004. This Yankee team is getting hot at the right time. After a well-deserved day off today, the Yanks will open a key 3-game series with Boston Tuesday night. The magic is back in New York. The ghosts in Yankee Stadium would not have it any other way...
